Macarons Need Not Be An Expensive Affair

Macarons used to be such an expensive treat, that we will only buy when we feel fancy while we sip hot piping tea from posh & exquisite restaurants - but with the advent of home bakers such as My Daily Bread, we are now able to enjoy them without paying an arm and a leg.

My Daily Bread is founded by a good friend of mine, Wesley who began the journey of making his own bakes, originally as a form of recreational activity (i.e. a hobby) - but has since taken the world by a storm when he decided to leave his full time career then to pursue this home-bakery business.

What I particularly enjoyed about his macarons were that, they aren’t overly sweet & cloying and yet encapsulating all the unique flavour creativity that attempts to push the norms revolving around the usual piece of Macaron.

From his recent Macaron bake sale, we have tried the following flavours: Red Velvet, Hazelnut Chocolate, Soda Grape & Kaya Butter Toast.

Our favourites would have to be the Hazelnut Chocolate as well as Kaya Butter Toast, as both flavour profiles are reminiscent of our childhood, designed with a twist - the Kaya Butter Toast even had a block of butter within it that really made it stand out (definitely made for friends who enjoy their typical traditional morning toast)!

Flavour Profile:

Red Velvet Macaron - Classic red velvet, but much creamier and decadent as they added homemade buttermilk apart from the simple cream cheese frosting alone.

Hazelnut Chocolate Macaron - Not made with Nutella but with concentrated hazelnut paste which accentuates the luscious notes of the hazelnut without being smothered by the typical chocolate aftertaste that usually comes from Nutella.

Soda Grape Macaron - Wesley’s background in F&N helped him to conceive this unique Macaron flavour that has a good balance of sweet and sour notes, and it is definitely inspired by how a great grape flavoured soda should be like (without the fizziness).

Kaya Butter Toast Macaron - Honestly, we had a good time with this Macaron as it possess all the elements of a well made traditional toast, apart from the fact that we are now having it encapsulated within a Macaron. In order to recreate this successfully, Wesley worked hard to make the pandan coconut cream with pandan extract (from the leaves), and carefully added a tiny block of butter right in the middle of the filling, and coated Macaron with yeasty crumbs (in his words).

To sum it up, definitely 100% super proud of my good friend and if you are looking to make purchases for your next party or just simply to enjoy good ol’ bakes & macarons, feel free to find Wesley from My Daily Bread and support local My Daily Bread Facebook | My Daily Bread Instagram .
